Fifty participants Read Across America at the Anne Arundel County Department of Social Services (DSS) on March 6th. The participants included students from the Teen Parent Education Program (TPEP) and Hispanic Adult Learners from the DSS English as a Second Language and General Educational Development classes. Participants were able to bring their babies as community leaders and heroes read Dr. Seuss books to the children and spent time with the adult learners. Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman was the first one to read to the kids and was using all the Spanish he knew.

Also in attendance were Rachael Maconachy, Director of Anne Arundel County DSS; Ardenia Holland, Public Information Officer for DSS; Karen Painter, TPEP Manager for Kingdom Kare and Annapolis; Tierra Chin, Chief Operating Officer for Maryland Family Network; Karen Nissly, Director of Annapolis Family Support Center; and staff from TPEP, Annapolis Family Support Center, and the Annapolis Fire Department. The Adult Learners, TPEP students, and their babies had the opportunity to get on a fire engine and look at the firefighter’s uniforms. The fire department generously donated books for the children.
