Spencer Evans is a considerate Career Coach, working at Corkran Middle School to assist students and families with career exploration and goals. “The thing that motivates me to be a career coach is seeing the potential in our youth and knowing that they have the ability to do great things if they have the correct mentorship and guidance,” said Spencer. He served in the United States Army and then worked as a recruiting leader before becoming a Career Coach.
Practicing the Four Focuses
Spencer has planned career fairs, conducted assessments, and followed up with students that expressed interest in careers.
Through helping students get to know themselves and their interests along with understanding the positive attributes that make them unique, Spencer works with students to recognize what skills they need to develop and gives practical advice to integrate important life skills.
By developing connections with the students, Spencer helps them explore future pathways/career choices and which may be the best for how they learn. For example, Spencer asked Corkran student’s favorite staff members about how they demonstrate GRIT to help students understand how people they knew used GRIT in their education pathway, whether it be the military (like Spencer), trade school, college, or the workforce. Activity Highlight
Spencer has implemented one-on-one sessions and small groups to connect with students through career planning activities and discussing life obstacles. “I am proud to see how students have grown and how comfortable they are when approaching me about all things life and career,” said Spencer.
What Advice Would You Give to Anne Arundel County Students?
“One piece of advice that I would give to students of Anne Arundel County is that while a lot of us feel misunderstood or lost at times, each of us brings something to the table that makes us great and unique. Also, be yourself – everyone else is already taken.” – Spencer Evans, Career Coach at Corkran Middle School
